The Rendlesham Forest Incident
One of the best documented UFO cases in modern history was the series of sightings near Rendlesham Forest by US and British Military personnel. These sightings have come to be known as the Rendlesham Incident or as the “British Roswell”.
Rendlesham Forest is located just outside the town of Suffolk, England. At the time of the UFO sightings it was the site of two military bases: RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters. Both bases were being used by the USAF.
Somewhere around 3am on the morning of December 26, 1980 an unidentified flying object was reported somewhere near the East Gate of RAF Woodbridge by a USAF security detail. Initially it was believed that an aircraft had possibly crashed somewhere in the woods. However, as the security detail approached the site, numerous bright lights were seen darting rapidly between trees in the forest. The airmen also reported seeing a larger, very luminous object.
According to their testimony, this object was cone-shaped metallic object suspended above the trees in a yellow mist with a pulsating blue and red circle above it. The UFO moved away from its initial location triggering a pursuit from the security detail. The pursuit lasted roughly two hours. After this time the object disappeared.
At dawn, around 7am the airmen returned to the location where the object had first been seen. Upon arrival the men found three small impressions in a triangular pattern, as well as burn marks and broken branches on nearby trees. At 10.30 a.m. the local police were called out to see the impressions on the ground. Local Police believed the marks could have been made by an animal.
On the early morning of December 28 the airmen returned to the site in the company of their Deputy Base Commander Lt. Col, Charles I Halt. Halt recorded the event on a handheld cassette recorder. While the airmen and Halt investigated the site, It was during this investigation that a flashing light was seen across the field to the east, almost in line with a farmhouse that was adjacent to the airbase. Other lights were seen in the sky to the north and south, the brightest of which seemed to intermittently beam down a stream of light.
The entire incident would have just gone away had it not been for one man. In October 1983 a British newspaper, News of the World, printed the story relayed to them by Larry Warren, a former US airman. In the article, Warren used the alias, Art Wallace as to avoid possible repercussions from the US military.
After the release of this article several others began to come forward. The most noted was the aforementioned Lt Col Charles Halt. Although Halt’s first personal recount was not until 1991 a document now known as the Halt Memo was obtained by researchers in the 1980’s. Dated January 13, 1983, the internal memo titled, “Unexplained Lights”, is Halt’s account of the 12-28 encounter. There is also the Halt Tape, an audio recording that the Lt Col made on December 28 to document the search.
To date there have been several television documentaries based on the Rendlesham Incident. They have featured the individuals involved as well as photo evidence by researchers. One of the better documentaries produced was featured on The History Channel’s “UFO Files”. In it Charles Halt gives researchers a very detailed account of the Rendlesham Incident from its beginning to present.
For UFO researchers and enthusiasts, Rendlesham ranks at the top for credible testimony and physical evidence that UFO’s are real and are on most cases controlled by someone or something other than man.
